報告人簡介：Andrew Goatly, 教授，香港嶺南大學(xué)英語系主任，博士生導(dǎo)師。其主要研究興趣包括批評話語分析、經(jīng)濟(jì)語言學(xué)、隱喻學(xué)、文體學(xué)以及語用學(xué)研究，并且成果豐碩，在國際文體學(xué)界頗有名氣，并且擔(dān)任多家國際性重要理論期刊的編委委員。其所倡導(dǎo)的基于話語的功能性文體研究可以看作是文體研究的一個重要生長點。近來其關(guān)注隱喻同意識形態(tài)之間的關(guān)聯(lián)性，對于有效論證語言與思維和政治的關(guān)系很有啟示作用，在國際上引起了一定的反響。因此，其所承擔(dān)的諸多項目因其實踐性與參考性而廣為認(rèn)同。自1972年起，先后供職于盧旺達(dá)國立大學(xué)、泰國藝術(shù)大學(xué)、RAMSDEN男子中學(xué)、泰國清邁大學(xué)、新加坡國立大學(xué)、南洋理工大學(xué)、新加坡科技大學(xué)、南洋教育學(xué)院、奧地利格拉茨大學(xué)和嶺南大學(xué)等諸所大學(xué)，教研經(jīng)歷豐富。

報告內(nèi)容簡介：Conventional metaphors, those lexicalised and institutionalised in the dictionary of a language, operate at a relatively high level of latency, and their power to influence us subconsciously is directly related to this latency. This talk explores metaphor as a tool of capitalist ideology, i.e. ‘metaphorical meaning in the service of the power of capital’ , investigating patterns of conventional metaphors found in the English dictionary, and which are implicated in the rise, persistence and current manifestations of capitalism. Metaphorical data is taken from self-compiled online database known as Metalude. This identifies sets of metaphorical lexical items (9000+) to be found in the contemporary lexicon of English, often called conceptual metaphors, or root analogies or metaphor themes.
